With a quick search, you can find lots of articles detailing the benefits of kindness in the workplace. There is a change in the air (and not just because summer is ending) and employers and employees alike are turning to an honest heart change to make positive and lasting changes in their workplace. In the nuances of the workplace environment, there are so many ways to make a change, leading to happier employees, greater productivity, and an increased bottom-line, so much so that it can be overwhelming. So let's keep it simple and stick to one of the universal basic needs: kindness. Seems obvious doesn't? I mean, treat others as you would like to be treated yourself, right? But how many of us are intentionally practicing it? According to an article by the Harvard Business Review, when the opposite, rudeness, is prevalent in your workplace, employees are 3 times less likely to help others! With that out of the way, let's get down to it. As an employee, here are a few ways that you can encourage kindness in your workplace: Stop and listen: Asking your colleague this morning, "how are you doing?", was great, but did you actually listen to their answer? No judgment here if you didn't! A simple question can become routine. Listening to the answer and engaging in it can be a big step in growing connection! Look for opportunities to help: Helping others can be a great positivity boost for both yourself and the colleague that you are lending a hand to! So be on the lookout for an employee in need and you'll be surprised by your intentionality and the change it brings. Make time: This one is a catch-all. Both previous suggestions take time so you're going to have to make some if you want to be intentional. It is a resource that you can't get back so giving it is a true act of kindness. We know that these are simple suggestions but that's the point! The simple things build into a greater change. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, helps build a great work environment. In the last blog we talked about what workplace wellbeing is exactly. Now that we have that out of the way, let's jump into the factors that could be affecting your employees' health as well as some ways to work on them! Identifying the problem areas within your company is going to be one of the biggest steps to working towards a positive change for both employees' health and their productivity. You have to know what you're looking for, right? So to note, these 3 factors aren't an exhaustive list, but they're a start! 1. Workplace environment: great news! This is one of the factors that you as an employer have a large degree of control over! Unfortunately it's also something that doesn't always get a whole lot of love. Factors such as noise levels, exposure to tobacco smoke, quality of machinery and equipment, relationships with supervisors and co-workers could be grating on your workplace morale. What to do: Start working towards removing sources of stress and health risks in your workplace. Make your workplace a smoke-free zone! Still rocking the old, uncomfortable lighting? Change them out for the sake of your employees! 2. Job control: As the owner of a growing business handing off responsibilities to your employees can be difficult but by doing so you could be improving your workplace wellbeing! How involved are your employees in the everyday decision making and how much do their opinions matter? What to do: Start encouraging employees to identify concerns about the work environment. Start giving them control over what happens to them at work! Employees need to feel that they are listened to and they have some control on what affects them. 3. Individual health practices: This is where we enter into tougher territory as an employer. How can you control the individual health practices of your employees? Short answer? You can't. Smoking, drinking, eating habits, exercise... this is just a small list of what could be affecting your employees' individual health! So what the heck do you do? The key word is encouragement. You care about your employees, so show it. Provide information and education. Anything from pamphlets on stress management to educational seminars about drug prevention or heart smart cooking. Offer programs on how to stop smoking! Why not allow employees to include their family? Finally, give your HR or yourself the tools needed to help promote health and wellness! Do company-wide health challenges, ecourage your employees to log their activity, make a fun competition out of it. This is just a small number of ways to get that wellness train rolling! If that sounds daunting then book a demo with us at SparkJoy Wellness and we'll do it all for you! While understanding workplace wellness is relatively easy, promoting it takes work and dedication as an employer. That being said, know that it's worth it! There are countless studies out there proving just how valuable workplace wellbeing can be. Make it a focus in your workplace and find out the benefits for yourself! So what if we told you that you don't have to handle workplace wellbeing on your own? When you see the words "workplace wellness" the meaning seems pretty straight-forward and, in reality, it is! Unfortunately, regardless of how obvious it may seem, a lot of companies aren't engaging in practices that will not only improve employees health and happiness but will ultimately increase profit. Yes, you read it correctly. It's been shown that happy and healthy employees leads to more productivity and less sick days. Workplace wellness is a smart investment and we want to show you why! Ok that all sounds great but what does it actually mean? To understand workplace wellness it's important to first start with individual wellness. This refers to a person’s ability to maintain physical and mental well-being including doing things that protect and enhance health and reducing or staying away from those things that place health at risk. This is important because this is exactly what you are trying to promote in your employees! Workplace wellness on the other-hand, refers to an organization’s ability to promote and maintain the physical and mental health of its employees. It is also about reducing risks to employees’ health and wellness through safe work practices, healthy work environments and responsible hosting of company events. Essentially it's where your responsibilities, as an employer, come into play! A study asked workers to report which aspects of their job performance improved on days they exercised! For some employers this all may seem daunting. I mean, you're already firing on all cylinders just trying to keep your business running! We definitely get it. We at SparkJoy Wellness want to help because unfortunately, whether you have an HR team or you are tackling it yourself, there are wrong ways to approach this opportunity. You can find yourself with a ton of extra work with little to no positive gain. That's why over the next several weeks we're going to give you a guide on how you can begin your journey of creating an amazing workplace environment full of happy and healthy employees!
